Cold call opener tips
Try out different call openers and track your results!
Tom Alaimo's LinkedIn post offers three tips for better cold call openers:
→ Get yourself ready.
Speak slowly and use pauses. If you're feeling low energy, stand up and listen to some upbeat music. If you're anxious, try box breathing to calm down.
→ Use the "Ring a Bell" opener.
Say, "Hey [Name], this is Tom from Gong. Does that name ring a bell?" If they say yes, respond with a light joke. If no, move on to your pitch.
→ Try a permission-based approach.
Acknowledge it's a cold call: "Hey [Name], this is Tom from Gong. I know I'm calling out of the blue, but do you have 27 seconds to hear why I'm calling you specifically?" The word "specifically" sets you up to mention your research.
LinkedIn call connection
Johnny Stiffell's LinkedIn post reveals a winning cold call opener.
Here's how it works:
Start with "Hi [Name], it's Johnny from Cognism."
Don't ask who you're speaking to. Mention you recently connected on LinkedIn and wanted to follow up.Then wait silently.
This approach feels familiar and friendly, making prospects curious.
After this opener, use your research. Mention competitors you've helped. This grabs attention because you might share new information about their competition.
This method feels less gimmicky and salesy than typical openers.
Try it out and see how it works for you.
First impressions that stick
Jason Bay's LinkedIn post reveals a powerful cold call opener.
Here's the breakdown:
Use this opener: "Have you heard our name tossed around?"
Full example: "Hi Dave, was reaching out because we work with outdoor brands like North Face, Columbia, and Patagonia—it's Jason with COMPANY. Have you heard our name tossed around?"
Why it works:
Makes prospects feel they should know you
Uses social proof
Performs 2x better than common openers (Gong data)
Variations:
Localize: Mention local companies or schools
Specify industry: Name similar companies in their niche
