Turning trigger events into replies
Learn from these top performers
In an article about effective email strategies for prospects starting new jobs, Jen Allen-Knuth explains why many cold emails fail and how to improve them.
When a prospect begins a new role, it's a sales trigger event that can open doors for engagement. However, most emails sent at this time are generic and ineffective.
Why many emails fail
They are polite but not personalized.
They ask the prospect to share priorities, which is a big ask from someone they don't know.
Politeness alone doesn't make an email stand out.
How to write better emails
Research and create a hypothesis about a problem the prospect might face.
Personalize the email with specific observations from your research.
Explain why you're reaching out and how you can help.
Offer a unique insight into their potential problem.
End with a low-pressure call to action, like congratulating them on their new job.
This approach shows you've done your homework and have something valuable to add. It's about starting a conversation, not just making a sale.
If your first guess about their problem is wrong, adjust your approach in the next email.
Standing out in sales emails
Samantha McKenna discusses how to stand out in a crowded inbox. When prospects receive many sales emails daily, it's crucial to differentiate your message.
Instead of sending hundreds of generic emails, focus on quality over quantity. Research your prospects and send personalized emails that show you understand them.
Use a creative subject line that only makes sense to the recipient. This increases open rates and improves your reputation.
Your emails should make it clear why you're reaching out and what value you offer. Even if the response is a "no," it opens a door for future communication.
Btw, Kyle Coleman said something similar in a recent post.
Quick email checklist
Yurii Veremchuk from Woodpecker provides a quick checklist for writing effective cold emails.
Before sending, ensure each word counts.
Use a short subject line with 1-3 words that doesn’t scream "SALES."
Start with a researched first line and write in simple language.
Structure the email in an F-shape with short sentences.
Clearly state why you're reaching out and highlight what's in it for the prospect.
Make sure the email can be read on a phone without scrolling, and include social proof showing how you've helped similar companies.
End with a soft call-to-action.
Example Email:
Subject: DACH outreach plan
Hi Margaret, I noticed from Woodpecker’s Q2 report that expanding to DACH is a priority for Q1 2025.
Cold emails that work in DACH are different from those used in the US. Hubspot’s DACH team booked 27% more meetings after working with us for two months.
Would insights on how they achieved this interest you?
