How to improve your cold emails fast

What is missing in your cold email prospecting strategy?

Yurii Veremchuk explains what makes a great one based on analyzing over 100,000 emails:

  • Use short, simple subject lines. Keep them 1-3 words, like an internal company email.

  • Focus on relevance over personalization. Have a clear, work-related reason for reaching out, and don’t personalize just to seem personal.

  • Be specific from the start. Show why you’re contacting them and include research in the first line.

  • Highlight the value, not the features. Explain how you can solve a problem for the prospect.

  • Use a clear and gentle call to action. Don’t push too hard—make it easy for them to respond or decline.

  • Ensure your email is mobile-friendly. Prospects shouldn’t need to scroll too much to read it on their phone.

  • Save personalization for the PS section. Mention personal interests there, so it doesn’t distract from your main message.

Cold email strategies that work

In episode 559 of The Paul Higgins Show, Paul talks to Damien Elsing from Click Media to bust common myths about cold emails. Damien has over ten years of experience with HubSpot and shares practical insights for improving cold outreach.

Here are the key takeaways:

  1. Cold emails can be effective with relevance and personalization. Even if some people don’t respond, others might, so don’t give up.

  2. Keep cold emails short and direct. Highlight benefits, as recipients don’t know you, and they prefer concise messages.

  3. Avoid sending mass emails from your personal account. It risks getting blacklisted. Use separate accounts and sustainable email practices.

  4. Emails should sound conversational and human, not like ads. Steer clear of pushy language.

  5. Subject lines matter less than who the sender is. Simple and personal lines often work well.

  6. Personalizing emails with LinkedIn references may help, but it can be time-consuming when targeting many prospects. Consider if it’s worth the effort.

  7. AI tools, like Clay, can help with personalization, but they aren't perfect yet.

  8. Don't use platforms like Mailchimp for cold outreach—they trigger spam filters. Instead, use dedicated cold emailing tools and warm up new domains for at least 14 days before large campaigns.

  9. Aim for a positive response rate of 1-2%, as the majority of replies will be negative. Focus on building a steady pipeline by running consistent marketing campaigns.

Making cold emails more effective

Rozana offers these specific tips to improve cold email responses:

  1. Start your final email with, "Hey [First Name], last email." This creates urgency by making it clear that this is their last chance to reply.

  2. Mention someone else in the prospect’s team if they haven’t responded, like: "Hi [First Name], maybe [Another Team Member's Name] is responsible for this?" This shows you've done your research and may prompt them to redirect you to the right person.

  3. Assume why they haven’t replied by labeling the situation. Say things like, "It seems like this isn't a priority for you right now" or "It seems like you're satisfied with your current solution." Prospects often respond to correct these assumptions.

The goal is to trigger any response, which can lead to further conversation.

"Strong personalization is an email that can only be sent to exactly one person. Personalization is weak when you use replacers."
